Feeding Guide for Horses
FEEDING RECOMMENDATIONS :
It is important with any new feed type that you introduce it to
your animals gradually to allow their digestive systems to adjust.
We advise over a period of 7-8 days is advisable.
Most animals can eat haylage ad lib but please always ensure
your animals have access to clean fresh water at all times.
We advise that horse owners initially weigh their portions of
haylage as it much denser than hay because of the higher moisture
content so you will need more by weight but less by volume.
As a general rule a typical 16hh 500kg riding horse requires 1%
of its body weight in dry feed daily eg, 5kg hay = 7-8.5kg
haylage.
It is difficult to advise feeding quantities as there are so
many variables in horses such as their age, breed, desired body
condition, exercise level, climate, quantity and quality of
available pasture, temperament & behaviour.
As a guide only feed horses 0.75-1.5kg /100kg of body weight as
the table below indicates;

NOTE: These feeding amounts are a guide only. Quantities vary
depending on your desired horse's body condition, breed, age,
exercise level, climate, and the quantity and quality of available
pasture.
